Our clients came to us wanting a contemporary extension to their house in Artarmon’s heritage conservation area. The young family wanted modern living spaces integrated with a new covered outdoor entertainment area and swimming pool.
To address the client brief for a contemporary design within a heritage conservation area, our solution was to maintain a traditional presence to the street front while opting modern open living to the rear.
The contemporary extension has been designed for indoor-outdoor living with tall raking ceilings opening up to the north. Included in the extension are new bathrooms, a bedroom, as well as a new dining room, living/gym room and study connected to the pool and outdoor entertainment area. The orientation of large windows and glazed doors to the northern side makes for well-lit, naturally ventilated and open spaces.
The family’s existing living/kitchen/dining areas have been reconfigured to create a larger open plan living/kitchen area, butler’s pantry and mudroom. The complete upper floor of the existing residence has also been redesigned to create a spacious parent’s retreat suite, complete with bedroom, en-suite, walk-in-robe and study.
Construction has progressed well with steel structure installed, modern slim line bricks laid, windows installed and swimming pool concrete poured. Interior fit-out has begun. Our clients are pleased with the process thus far, love the architectural design, volume and sense of the spaces taking form.
